I 3 packs of size 1 diapers and rolled each one up and tied them with a ribbon. I then made 3 levels and put a paper towel holder in the middle. I bought some pretty ribbon and tied up all the levels. I put puffy stickers all around it for decoration. I also bought a huge duck to put on the top. It was the hit of the party!

This is my second attempt at making a diaper cake - and I'm loving it! For this one I thought I'd combine towels and diapers with a bath time theme. We don't know the sex of the baby so I went with a green & yellow combination. I tucked in some baby bath soaps, shampoo, powder and baby lotion. Everyone loved the cute rubber ducks... It was a hit and the mother-to-be loved it I wrapped it up in a white organza fabric (as it can be re-used) and the effect was great. I also got some stickers to decorate the towel.

Here's a some pictures of the diaper cake I made for my sister in law who is due Nov 16th and expecting a little girl. The bottom layer has washcloths & J&J baby lotions, the middle later has bibs and J&J baby massage gels and the top layer has really cute onesies with J&J baby powders. I couldn't find a pink duck so I topped it with a cute rubber pink Peep which was a nice touch for a little girl. There's also 2 spoon/fork sets tucked in as well as baby hair goodies throughout. This 3 tiered cake on an 11 inch cake base used 64 size 1 diapers and took about 2 1/2 hours to finish. One helpful hint I picked up was to hot glue the bottles of lotion, gel & powder to the cake base or directly to the decorative ribbon so that they don't shift around.

I made this diaper cake for my granddaughters baby shower. I used:
  • 171 size 1 diapers
  • 1/2 inch wooden dowel for the center
  • baby bottles
  • rattles
  • sippy cup
  • childs silverware
  • bibs
  • burp clothes
  • teethers
  • childs first toothbrush set etc.
I also used yellow with orange polka dot ribbon for around the tiers and did streamers of orange curling ribbon. To fill in the holes, I used a baby rattle and pacifier shower favor.

I started with 56 size 1 Luvs diapers. I rolled each one & secured each with a rubber band in the center. I then started to build my cake. I first covered a cardboard square with yellow tissue paper and added a paper doily in the center of the cardboard. I set that aside for now. Time to build the tiers. For the bottom tier I started with 1 8oz baby bottle & added a ring of the rolled diapers around it. I secured these with a larger rubber band. Then I just kept adding until it looked right. The middle layer I started by holding a 4oz baby bottle on top of the remaining part of the 8oz bottle. Then basically did the same as the bottom tier only making it a bit smaller around. Then I moved on to the top layer. I added a circle of the rolled diapers around the remaining part of the 4oz bottle. Again do the same as on the other tiers, making each a bit smaller around. I then tied each tier kinda tight with white tulle & cut the rubber band off each one. Now it is time to decorate!! I used 1 receiving blanket folded to the height of the tier, centered it & wrapped it around securing the end with double sided tape. I add 3 different colored ribbons, bows, curly ribbon, rattles rubber duckies, onesies, baby wash cloths, bay powder, shampoo, lotion & other baby items I found a picture of a baby girl in the bathtub on the internet and personalized it with my Hallmark program with the baby's first & middle names and her year of birth. I just kept moving things around until I was happy with the results.

I rolled newborn diapers and secured them with rubberband and put them together in circles. I made the bottom circle layer fit my cake stand and secured the circle of diapers with very large rubberbands. I fashioned the top layer the same way and secured it to the bottom layer by pushing short dowels down from the top into the bottom circles of diapers. I used baby themed ribbon from the Dollar Tree to cover the rubberbands on each layer and then took a length of baby blue tulle and knotted it evenly along it's length and put a srting of it on each layer. I added baby toys and gifts by fastening them onto long lollipop sticks from the craft store with either rubberbands or tape and pushing the sticks between the rolled diapers. I added poofs of tulle wired to the lollipop sticks inserted into the layers of diapers. I made "roses" with rolled baby socks and added them the same way as the other items

MY COOK RECIPE :-)

Ingredients:

  • 54 size 2 Pampers diapers (candle rolled, 8:19:27)
  • 1 Plastic balloon stick for the center
  • 2 Baby washcloths
  • 1 Bath towel
  • 1 Fleece baby blanket
  • Ribbon
  • 1 Rubber ducky
  • 2 Heat sensitive soft edge spoons
  • 1 Pacifier chain
  • 1 Baby brush and comb set
  • 6 Self-made fun foam flowers
  • 1 Rattle
  • 1 Childs first toothbrush
  • 1 Pacifier
  • 27 paper clips
  • 1 needle
  • Fine transparent fishing line
  • 6 pins (for the flowers)

Hi girls! I'm sure you all know what to do with the stuff to bake the cake on my picture. Let me just remark that there are no clips or rubber bands in the cake. I removed them all after fixing each tier with the textile and ribbon. And my fun foam flowers can be easily attached to a green painted wooden food skewers to create a nice plant pokes. Hope you enjoy!

So I put togeter my first diaper cake to send to her and it turned out great. So I think. ;-) Let me know what you think, should I stick with my day job or spend some time to make another?? Thanks for your comments!

    • 70 Diapers
    • 1 9oz Bottle
    • 1 Bottle & Nipple Brush
    • 1 Tether
    • 1 "Wild Thing I Think I Love You" Bib
    • 2 Pacifier’s
    • 1 Plush Duck "Quack Quack"
    • 1 First Keys
    • 1 Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder
    • 1 Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Lotion
    • 1 Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Nourishing Lotion
    • 1 Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Destin
    • 1 Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Shampoo
    • 1 Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Wash
    • 1 Comb & Brush Set
    • 70 Clear rubber bands
    • 3 regular brown rubber bands (three different sizes to fit around each different size tier)
    • 1 10 inch cake pad
    • 1 10 inch dollies
    • 3 different size cake pans (10”, 8”, and 6”)

    • STEP 1: Open up a pack of diapers (I used TARGET store brand). I took and rolled all 70 Target brand diapers and placed 1 clear rubber band around each diaper. Then I Placed the rolled diapers standing up in the cake pans and placed 1 of the regular rubber bands around each tier of diapers to hold them all in place. Then I flipped the cake pans upside down and placed the bottom of the diapers onto the cake pad with dollies. The 8” cake pan upside down on the tier I just flipped over. Then I placed the 6” (last tier) on top of the 8” tier that is already on top of the 10” tier. This set up is just like making a three tiered wedding cake.

    • Step 2: Then I took the 9oz bottle, Bottle & Nipple Brush, Tether, 2 Pacifier’s, First Keys, Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder, Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Lotion, Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Nourishing Lotion, Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Destin, Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Wash, Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Shampoo, and the Comb & Brush Set and stuffed them all around the cake.

    • STEP 3: Adding the ribbon to each tier….I chose yellow ribbon 1.5 to go around each tier of the cake. Then a white/clear 7/8 to go on top of the yellow ribbon. I glued the ribbon at the ends to hold. So now each tier is decorated with a yellow ribbon and a white/clear ribbon as well as all the baby products.

    • STEP 4: Now it was time to add the bib and the plush duck that quacks. I placed the bib around the 2nd tier as if I was putting the bib on a child, and I tucked the back of the bib into the 1st tier of diapers so that the back of the bib did not stick out in any way. Then I placed the duck on the top of the 3rd tier and secured it with orange curling ribbon. The excess curling ribbon is curled to add a little more decoration to the cake.
